What drives the price
- Length and shape. Straight, L or U, and bar seating.
- Appliances. The grill is usually the biggest single item; fridges, burners, sinks and pizza ovens add up.
- Countertops. Granite, quartzite or natural stone, cut to fit.
- Utilities. Gas, electric and water runs, and how far they travel from the house.
- Finish. Stone veneer vs stucco or block.
- Cover. A pergola or pavilion lets you use it in the rain and protects appliances.
Prefab vs custom
Prefab islands cost less and install fast, but sizes and finishes are fixed. A custom island is built on a proper base with a block or steel frame, finished in stone veneer to match your patio, and laid out around your appliances. For Long Island winters, the base and frame matter more than anything you can see.
Ways to save
- Start with a straight island and add a bar later
- Spend on the grill and countertop; save on extras you'll rarely use
- Run gas and electric for future appliances now
- Build it alongside the patio so the base and utilities go in once
