What affordable patios cost on Long Island
Long Island contractor guides put an installed paver patio at about $21–$36 per square foot. Older published figures are lower ($16–$19 for basic sand-set pavers in 2022), so treat anything under $20 today with caution. Here's what that means for common sizes of affordable patios:
| Patio size | At $21/sq ft | At $36/sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| 200 sq ft (about 10×20) | $4,200 | $7,200 |
| 300 sq ft (about 15×20) | $6,300 | $10,800 |
| 400 sq ft (about 20×20) | $8,400 | $14,400 |
| 600 sq ft (about 20×30) | $12,600 | $21,600 |

The most affordable patio materials
| Material | Material cost (published) | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete pavers | About $3–$17 per sq ft | The most affordable patios for most homes; huge choice of colors and patterns; pavers can be lifted and reset |
| Porcelain | About $15–$20 per sq ft | Modern, stain resistant, stays relatively cool; costs more than pavers |
| Natural stone (bluestone, flagstone) | Varies; usually highest | Classic look; dark stone gets hot in the sun |
| Poured concrete slab | Usually lowest up front | Cheapest at first, but cracks can't be lifted and reset like pavers |
Material-only prices are from a Long Island contractor guide; installation adds labor and base work. Compare all three in pavers vs porcelain vs natural stone.
Eight ways to make your patio more affordable
- Size it for how you live. Room for a table and a lounge area is usually enough. You can extend it later.
- Choose concrete pavers. They're the most affordable patio material that still looks custom.
- Keep the shape and pattern simple. Fewer cuts mean less labor. A contrasting border dresses up a simple field.
- Stay on one level where the yard allows. Each step, landing and level change adds cost.
- Work with the grade. Placing the patio where the yard is already flat avoids big retaining walls.
- Do it in one visit. Adding the walkway or lighting while the crew and equipment are there costs less than a second trip.
- Plan in phases. Build the patio now and add a seat wall, fire pit or kitchen later, with sleeves and conduit laid in now.
- Book early. Planning over the winter gets you a spring spot in the schedule.
Affordable patios still need a proper base
A patio is only as good as what's underneath it. Proper excavation depth, a compacted stone base, edge restraint and polymeric sand are what keep pavers from sinking and shifting through Long Island winters. Skipping base work is the one way to make an affordable patio expensive. Fixing a sunken patio means pulling it up and starting over.
