Vinyl vs gunite pools on Long Island

Both are good pools. The right one depends on your budget, how custom you want it, and how much upkeep you're comfortable with.

What about Long Island winters?

Both types handle Long Island winters when they're closed properly: water lowered, lines blown out and plugged, and a good cover on. The bigger winter issue is usually the deck and coping, so the base under the patio matters as much as the pool type.

Choose vinyl if…

  • You want the most pool for the money
  • You'd like to be swimming this season
  • A rectangle or classic freeform with steps and a sun shelf suits you

Choose gunite if…

  • You want a truly custom shape, vanishing edge or attached spa
  • You prefer a plaster, pebble or tile finish
  • The budget allows for a longer, more involved build

There's also a third option

On a sloped or tight yard, a semi-inground pool with a stone wall can be the best fit, and the raised wall doubles as seating.

FAQ

Common questions

Is vinyl or gunite better for Long Island?

Neither is better in every case. Vinyl costs less and goes in faster; gunite is fully custom and has a different finish. Both handle winters when they're closed properly.

How long does a vinyl liner last?

Commonly 8–12 years, depending on water chemistry, sun and care. Replacing a liner costs far less than a new pool.

Do you build both?

Yes. We build inground vinyl and gunite pools and semi-inground pools with stone veneer walls, and we install above-ground pools.
